The Books & Books literary foundation is proud to present an evening with Geoffrey Philp, who will be discussing and reading from My Name is Marcus (Blue Banyan Books, $18.00.) This innovative biography brings the iconic civil rights leader, Marcus Garvey, to life in a way that’s accessible and engaging for children aged 8-12. By transforming Garvey from a distant historical figure into a relatable hero, this book aims to breathe new life into Jamaica’s rich cultural heritage.

About the Book:

Marcus Garvey, a pioneering figure in the global struggle for racial equality and Jamaica’s first national hero, is now accessible to young readers and visual learners through this groundbreaking graphic novel. About the Author:

Geoffrey Philp, a Silver Musgrave Medal recipient from the Institute of Jamaica, is the author of “My Name is Marcus,” the only graphic novel about the life of Marcus Garvey, Jamaica’s first National Hero. His poems and short stories have been published in The Oxford Book of Caribbean Verse, sx salon, Oxford Book of Caribbean Short Stories, World Literature Today, Punch, Visible, and Rattle: Poets Respond. Philp’s other awards include a Marcus Garvey Award for Excellence in Education (2022) and a Luminary Award from the Consulate of Jamaica (2015). One of Philp’s poems, “A Prayer for my Children,” is featured on The Poetry Rail at The Betsy–an homage to 12 writers who have shaped Miami culture. He is working on “Unstoppable You: 50 Quotes from Marcus Garvey to Inspire Greatness.”
