About the Event:

Over the last decade, Tamargo has been photographing land forms and landscapes. Sand dunes– to be specific– in South America, North America, Europe, and Africa. The work started on one level as a challenge to make interesting photographs with just the elements of sky and ground. You know him as a street photographer for so much of his photographic life, so this was a challenge and a departure from his comfort of using his camera.

Another concern is climate change and human intrusion on the land. Since his graduate studies, he has always been interested in how human interactions with the land have consequences. Thus, some of the photographs obviously try to show the majestic form of the dunes, while others try to incorporate things humans place that change the structure of the visual plane within the frame.

About the Photographer:

Joseph Tamargo is a Cuban American photographer born in New York who has been photographing since the 1970s. He has an M.F.A. degree in Photography from the University of Miami and since 1986 to 2020 he taught and directed the photography program at Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus. He retired in 2020 but came back in 2022 where he teaches analog photography, at Miami Dade College Wolfson campus once or twice a year.
