Coral Gables Gallery Night featuring Dmitry Zhitov
Trans-Siberian Express
A multi sensory journey across Russia through
Photographs by Dmitry Zhitov and Poetry by Ksenia Kogan
Crossing Russia by Trans-Siberian Railway from Moscow to Vladivostok was more than just a 9,288km journey over 7 time-zones, it was a journey to the past… to my childhood. I went back to Russia to visit my family and friends after more than 10 years living in the United States. I felt like I was a child who took off on a journey of his dreams. Everything was so exciting and familiar, all the stops along the way, villages, towns and cities, amazing scenery through the window, sunrises and sunsets, music from the radio and the sound of the train. Babushkas selling piroshki (fried buns), drinking tea from the glass in a metal holder (traditional train tea cup), going to a train restaurant and eating borsh. Talking to strangers who become your friends on the way… and so much more brought back many memories from my childhood when I traveled by train with my mom. I am so excited to share this experience through photographs, sounds that I recorded on the way (sounds of train, train stations, people) and poetry of my dear friend and poet Ksenia Kogan. This is a multi-sensory journey by Trans-Siberian Express which will take you to Russia through photographs and sounds.
