About the Book:
A poignantly funny account of renowned writer and humorist Neal Pollack’s years as a marijuana addict. This is the Neal Pollack, the one who Rolling Stone dubbed the “Hot Writer of the Millennium” in 2000 and wrote the very first story for the first issue of McSweeney’s. His stories are hilarious with a hint of perspective, including one about his falling out w/Dave Eggers, the telling of the story acting as a long-overdue olive branch. Neal navigates life as a husband, father, and writer while high as a kite most of the time and we’re left wondering how he is able to hold it all together…until he doesn’t. He loses his mother, which causes him to spiral even more out of control and find a new addiction: gambling. But once his father becomes terminally ill, Neal puts the breaks on the gambling too and handles his father’s end-of-life needs in a way he never would have been able to while he was smoking pot. Pothead is not a book of statistics, it’s a humorous, anecdotal, and cautionary tale with the benefit of hindsight of the negative impact and addictive effect that marijuana can have on your life.
