Silvia Lopez
“the affirming vision of adoptive sibling bonding is welcome…a book to broaden collections about families.” – Kirkus Review, February 2018
This debut picture book by local author Silvia Lopez is a gentle story about love and acceptance within a multicultural, multiracial family. Meili, six years old and adopted from China, isn’t happy to learn that she will have to share Mama and Papa with a new baby soon to be adopted from Haiti. Who needs a baby when your family is just right? But as supportive adults involve her in the preparations for the new addition, Meili begins to accept her upcoming role of big sister and realizes that Sophie can be just right for the family too. The book’s illustrations are by Singaporean artist Ziyue Chen.
About the Author
Silvia Lopez has spent her whole life among books, first as a reader, then as librarian and finally as a writer. She devoured books in Spanish, her first language, until coming to United States as a Cuban refugee where she learned English and found another universe of books to read. The airlift of Haitian orphans after the 2010 earthquake served as inspiration for this book.
