Monsters in The Shape of Water: An Exploration of Genre
Monsters in The Shape of Water: An Exploration of Genre
Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water follows in the tradition of genre films that use their fantastical elements – monsters, magic, horror – to explore contemporary social and political issues. His latest effort grapples with prejudice and the concept of the other. Join us for a conversation on this aspect of genre filmmaking moderated by Gables Cinema Associate Director Javier Chavez, featuring Miami Herald writer Rene Rodriguez and filmmakers Diego & Andres Meza-Valdez.
Brothers Andres and Diego Meza Valdes have been a directing team for almost as long as they’ve been actual brothers. Several of their short films have been featured at prestigious international film festivals across the world to critical and audience success – most notably Boniato (2016) at the Sundance Film Festival’s Midnight Shorts Program. Recently, they directed for STARZ’s Ash vs Evil Dead Season 3 set to debut in February 2018.
The brothers are currently in post-production for OmniBoat, a full-length anthology featuring notable independent film directors (Phil Lord, Jeff Baena, The Daniels, etc.), as well as in development for a horror-action TV series with the MiTu Network.
