Leyendo con Mirta Ojito
Books & Books joins forces with Florida International University’s CasaCuba to present a new book club hosted by Cuban author and award-winning journalist Mirta Ojito.
Leyendo con Mirta is aimed at celebrating Cuban literature and will take place the last Tuesday of every other month beginning on February 25th, 7pm at Books & Books in Coral Gables.
“Mirta is a distinguished and beloved author in her own right, who brings a deep passion for literature and a natural appreciation for Cuban arts,” said María Carla Chicuén, executive director of CasaCuba at FIU. “Through Lee con Mirta, our hope is to ignite that passion within our local community and spark interest in discovering the rich contributions of Cuban authors in today’s literary landscape.”
The first event, to be held on February 25, will feature the book Our House in the Last World by Oscar Hijuelos and will be attended by the author’s widow Lori Marie Carlson, who is traveling to Miami for this special appearance. The complete Leyendo con Mirta book list for 2020 will be announced at the February event.

“I’m thrilled to share my love of books with other readers at Books & Books, a place I’ve long considered my second home,” said Mirta Ojito, Cuban-born and award-winning journalist and author. “I hope readers of all kinds will join me in this extraordinary adventure with CasaCuba.”
At each book club meeting, Ojito will lead a discussion on the book of the month, in English or Spanish, with the broader goal of fostering a deeper understanding of Cuban history, culture and identity.
“Leyendo con Mirta is truly a unique platform to showcase the literature of Cuba, with the esteemed author Mirta Ojito herself as a guide to exploring the exceptional works of Cuban writers,” said Cristina Nosti, director of events and marketing at Books & Books. “We are thrilled to continue our partnership with CasaCuba and to welcome more readers to enjoy contemporary Cuban literature.”
FIU’s CasaCuba seeks to provide a dynamic home for the discussion and study of Cuban affairs – history, policy and business – and the celebration of Cuban culture. Through its partnership with Books & Books, CasaCuba supports its mission with inclusive, community-building programming while the center proceeds with the architectural design phase of its state-of-the-art facility at FIU’s main campus.
