About the book:

Join Papan and Vanessa on a baking adventure and get ready to bake some delicious bread while you travel from Spain to France to Cuba and back again—all before the kitchen timer dings. Learn while kneading, dancing, singing, and hearing stories from the past that help shape Vanessa’s present and future!

Based on a true story, this is how Vanessa, when she was a little girl, learned to bake bread with her grandfather, Papan, and how she also learned about her grandpa’s story, which was also hers!

Baking bread requires a lot of patience. Some of it is about mixing ingredients together, and another part—a big part—of it is about waiting. Waiting while the dough rises, rests, rises, bakes. What makes baking between Vanessa and Papan fun is that Papan tells the amazing adventures of his life while they wait, and Vanessa listens! In this storytelling, Vanessa learns about her roots, and the power of love and family, and how stories can carry us through no matter what.

Food and family connect us through story. It all comes together in Papan’s kitchen!

About the Moderators:

Cuban-born and Miami-bred, Giovanny Gutierrez brings six years of hospitality experience to the table in his role as U.S. Havana Club Ambassador. A bona fide lover of rum, Gio first joined the Bacardi Team in 2013 as Florida ambassador for its high-end, award-winning Facundo Rum collection. From developing and executing trainings to fostering brand advocacy within the South Florida community, Gio satiates his insatiable thirst through educating and inspiring those around him by creating unforgettable spirited experiences with anyone that luckily crosses his path. While he lives and breathes Miami, you will typically find him traveling the country—hosting events and seminars, guest bartending anywhere where they’ll let him shake up a daiquiri, and representing all things Cuba.
Owner and Lead Baker of I Knead More, Chef Cristina Fernandez began her entrepreneurial journey during the height of the pandemic in Summer 2020. After five years in the Manhattan restaurant industry—under the likes of Thomas Keller, Joël Robuchon, and Jose Andres—Fernandez made the decision to bring her culinary experiences back to Miami to share with her home city. Her intention was just to do her own baking for a short amount of time until it was appropriate to return baking in restaurants again. However, that’s not the case. Within the two years of I Knead More’s growth, Chef Cristina has been able to work with Food Network’s South Beach Wine and Food Festival, TimeOut Miami, and 1-800-Lucky in Wynwood. The shining star of I Knead More’s bread menu is the Guava and Cream Cheese Babka—an homage to her New York training and Cuban roots. She is currently in the process of expanding her business from her home into a defined commercial space with the goal to further share her creations with her community.
