Coral Gables Gallery Night Opening: Evan J. Alexander
Evan J. Alexander Presents – Abstract Coordinates 30.40
When: Friday, November 2, 2018
7:00pm to 10:00pm
The gallery exhibition in November, Abstract Coordinates 30.40, features the work of Florida native, Evan J. Alexander. Comprised of original oil and acrylic paintings the art on display was inspired by the painterly quality of satellite imagery. Evan has focused on a controlled form of abstraction in the paintings made for this exhibition. He navigated certain landscapes to find compositions that aligned with the conventions of his prior work. This furthers the perpetual incorporation of advanced technologies within the traditional medium of oil painting.
Continuing but reorienting landscape painting into a two-dimensional topographical survey aligns with the sensibilities of painting on a two-dimensional surface. This concept defies conventional painting practices by forcing an unnatural view from above as an alternative form of landscape painting. The view from above is foreign to most given our tendencies to observe what is around us rather than what is below.
Evan chose landscapes from Syria seeking a connection with one of his ancestral homelands. Also, as another form of monitoring the transformation of the earth’s surface acknowledging the human interference. With most of the frustrating and troubling recent news regarding Syria, Evan strives to remind viewers of the natural beauty within the turmoil and humanitarian strife.
About Evan J. Alexander:
Evan J. Alexander is a multimedia artist inspired by the random occurrences in the universe. His style lacks the typical identifying qualities across his body of work. Evan might make an oil painting of a seagull he saw on the street and the next day he might create a digital collage of abstract components. Evan was born and raised in South Florida, studied at the University of Miami and ultimately completed his BFA at the School of Visual Arts in New York.
