Coral Gables Gallery Night featuring Cathy Allsman with “Subterranean Maps”
This series explores the feeling of being lost and trying to find your way home. Even having a map can leave us perplexed or lead us to a shadowy detour. We all long for refuge in some safe idyllic harbor. Sometimes that safety and peace can be easy to reach and other times it is staggeringly difficult to find your way through to shelter. Home can be an inviolable place or it could contain an unease and dangers of its own. While my paintings are representational, they are not meant to be realistic. Color was just as likely to be my starting point as the drawing in this series. Each painting is meant to evoke emotion and an exploration of its special terrain.
The world is astonishing in its beauty and unrelenting in its demand that we meet its challenges. To be centered and at peace may be a struggle. We can, perhaps, be at peace with the struggle or at least celebrate the beauty along the way. (Oh and if you want to know about the ladders, check out www.cathyallsmanart.com!)
About the Artist:
Cathy Allsman is award winning watercolor artist, who regularly exhibits in juried shows locally and nationally. She is a Signature Member of both the Miami and the Florida Watercolor Societies. Her painting has been featured in Splash 18 (a yearly compendium of the best in watercolor). All of her paintings are an emotional reaction to her visual experience. She seeks to translate that experience into color and light.
Cathy lives in Miami, Florida with her musician/psychologist husband and is inspired by Miami’s vivid cacophony of colors. Her work as a psychologist as well as her love of history, science fiction, dreams and cultural anthropology requires that she view life through many different lenses. In her art, she hopes to take you to these different worlds.
