ARTtuesdays/MIAMI Honors Margarita Cano as a Miami Legend
This year ARTtuesdays/MIAMI is pleased to honor Margarita Cano with the 2018 Helen Kohen Miami Legends Award. We are thrilled to salute her legendary, lasting influence on Miami’s art and culture community.
For 30 years Cano forged a game-changing career with the Miami Dade Public Library System as art librarian and then Community Relations Coordinator overseeing Outreach and Art Services. A brilliant advocate for art and culture, she served on the board of the Cintas Foundation and received the foundation’s lifetime service award at the Frost Art Museum of Florida International University. She also collaborated with Miami Dade College President Dr. Eduardo Padrón and Books & Books owner Mitchell Kaplan to launch Miami Book Fair International when it began in 1984 as Books by the Bay.
In the 1970s and 1980s, she made possible pivotal exhibits at the library highlighting local artists as well exploring national trends in art. She developed the concept of an Artmobile as a way to reach out to diverse communities. In addition, after retiring in 1992, she’s pursued her prolific artistic career, with shows in Miami, New York, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
You won’t want to miss taking part in this dynamic conversation. It will be a gem of an evening. Barbara Young, retired art librarian and Head of Art Services who worked for years with Cano with the Artmobile and exhibition programming, along with others will share fascinating insights into the roles our public library system and visionary Margarita Cano have played to make Miami the vibrant art community it is today.
