Books & Books is proud to present an evening with Ramesh Nyberg discussing his book Badge Tie and Gun: Life and Death Journeys of a Miami Detective.

About the Book:

NY Times Bestselling Author TJ English (Havana Nocturne, The Westies) calls it “the most absorbing cop memoir you will read this year–maybe ever.”

Retired Homicide Detective Ramesh Nyberg describes in rich detail his remarkable journey growing up in Miami as the child of an Indian school teacher and Swedish boat-builder. Nyberg considers Miami his only real sibling, and weaves jarring stories of murder and cocaine smugglers into poignant memories of his childhood and life lessons he learned sailing the waters of south Florida.

Ramesh spares no details as he brings the reader into crime scenes and the horrors of real violence, while also conveying the ironies and often humorous aspects of law enforcement. This book is filled with riveting stories, bizarre and often dangerous pursuits of violent offenders, heart-wrenching scenes of grieving families, and gripping behind-the-scenes descriptions of suspects’ confessions.

The book flashes back frequently to pivotal moments of Ramesh’s childhood that luminesce later in his life as guiding lessons in his career as a law enforcement officer. This is unlike any police memoir in existence; it is brutal, honest, and revealing, highlighting a time in Miami’s heyday of cocaine and crime that will likely never occur again.

This book contains strong language, adult themes, and graphic descriptions of violence, murder, and suicide.

About the Author:

Ramesh Nyberg’s very name should tell you that he’s an endangered species: he’s half Swedish and half east Indian, and all Miamian, having lived here his whole life—save for the first eleven months, when he lived in India after being born there. If that’s not enough, Ramesh became a police officer in 1979, and spent 27 years of his life in south Florida law enforcement. For 22 of those years, he was a homicide investigator with the Miami-Dade Police Department and worked on thousands of death cases.

Ramesh began writing at an early age, and over the last thirty-seven years has penned hundreds of magazine articles for various magazines, including Writer’s Digest and a column in the Miami Herald. Ramesh retired from law enforcement career in 2006 and in 2021 published his first book, The Ten Must-Haves to be a Great Detective. This past February, Ramesh published his life and career memoir, Badge, Tie and Gun – Life and Death Journeys of a Miami Detective. His writing life is interwoven with teaching, both at the high school level and for law enforcement training programs nationwide.

Ramesh lives in Miami with his wife, Mandira. A father to six children, Ramesh describes himself as an “incurable Miami Dolphin fan.” He enjoys great stories, especially of ocean adventure, as well as acoustic music, good bourbon, and Indian food.
