From Havana to DC: The Rise of Cuban Americans in Florida Politics

Monday, April 1, 5:30 PM | Books & Books, Coral Gables

Books & Books is excited to present an evening with Carlos Orta presenting his new book From Havana to DC: The Rise of Cuban Americans in Florida Politics

This event is FREE and open to the public and books will be available for purchase the night of the event!

About the Book:

“This book transcends mere nostalgia for a bygone era of cooperation and bipartisanship; it is a roadmap for contemporary leaders seeking to achieve remarkable feats by transcending extreme partisanship and blind allegiances.

Beyond its political scope, this narrative delves into the essence of the human spirit. It captures the power of resilience and the enduring belief in a dream that defies borders and spans generations. It is the story of the first Cuban Americans in Miami appointed and elected to political office —a narrative woven with threads of freedom, whispered aspirations, and an enduring influence on an evolving America.”

About the Author:

Carlos was born in Havana, Cuba. He attended both public and private K-12 schools. Both Barry University (2018) and Miami Dade College (2012) have inducted him into their respective “Alumni Hall of Fame.” In the Summer of 1988, at the age of 21, he secured a summer internship with then Senator Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, which changed his career’s entire trajectory. As luck would have it, the world of politics and public service provided him with the opportunity to work with the first or second group of Cuban Americans who were elected or appointed to public and political offices. He was a witness to the history that was being created.

Carlos is the past chair of Leadership Miami, a member of Leadership Florida’s Class XV, one of the founders of the United Way’s Young Leaders Society, and in 2018, he became chair of the Great Miami Chamber of Commerce. Carlos is on the board of directors of the Cuban American National Council (CNC), serving as Vice Chair. Today, Carlos is an architect of strategies, organizations, and programs. He either creates new, impactful opportunities or takes existing ones to new heights. He has a deep understanding of the public, private, and nonprofit sectors and their intersection with the U.S. Latino community and its leadership, he has earned a reputation as a trusted and strategic leader.
