Aaron Curtis - Quartermaster

You can trust my opinion because I'm tall, I work in the buying office, and I drink a lot of coffee.

Some recommendations include...

Scalped Vol 01: Indian Country (Paperback)

By Jason Aaron, R.M. Guer
$14.99
ISBN-13: 9781401213176
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Vertigo, 8/2007
If you claim to care about or have interest in Indian culture and you haven't read this series, you are lying. Put down that dusty copy of "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" and find out what's happening today.

Don't Stop Believin': How Karaoke Conquered the World and Changed My Life (Paperback)

Published: Da Capo Press, 12/2008
Other Editions of this Title
For Karaoke enthusiasts, this is full of recognition, envy, and ideas.

For those who are attracted to and repulsed by Karaoke, it's a how-to guide.

For those who have always wondered what the fuss is, it's an answer.

If you have no interest in Karaoke, what's wrong with you?

The Double Bind (Hardcover)

By Chris Bohjalian
$25.00
ISBN-13: 9781400047468
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Crown, 2/2007
Other Editions of this Title
This month, Bohjalian is joining us for the first time in several years. I've had this recommendation up for 2 years with the publisher's description, so it's nothing to do with his visit.

I don't want to seem like an author groupie or a literary suck-up, nor do I want to overstate the case. If I had a chance to use a time machine only once, I would return to the fall of 2006 when I read the ARC of "Double Bind" so that I could read it again for the first time.

In all seriousness, it only took this one book to make me a fan.

All Will Be Revealed (Paperback)

By Robert Anthony Siegel
$13.50
ISBN-13: 9781596922853
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: MacAdam/Cage Publishing, 3/2008
My favorite way to recommend is letting the author speak for her or himself:

"How many men manage to leave their imprint upon humanity in this way - not on the outside, the way we look, but on our very natures, what we want? The inventor of ice cream managed it, as did the first horticulturalist to domesticate the tobacco plant. Gutenberg did it, and so did Moses - Moses with his tablets, inventor of the desire to be good. It was select company. Auerbach's place in history would be assured."

Holy hell, that makes me want to read this all over again.

Mudbound (Hardcover)

By Hillary Jordan
$22.95
ISBN-13: 9781565125698
Availability: Special Order - Subject to Availability
Published: Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, 3/2008
Other Editions of this Title
Let's let her speak for herself. It begins thusly:

"When I think of the farm, I think of mud. Limning my husband's fingernails and encrusting the children's knees and hair. Sucking at my feet like a greedy newborn on the breast. Marching in boot-shaped patches across the plank floors of the house. There was no defeating it. The mud coated everything. I dreamed in brown."

If that doesn't make you want to pick the book up, I have no hope for you. Jordan's beautiful prose continues throughout. Be prepared to go to some dark places, but also to be dazzled (yes, dazzled) by a debut as satisfying as it is stark.

Requiem, Mass. (Hardcover)

By John Dufresne
$24.95
ISBN-13: 9780393057904
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: W. W. Norton & Company, 7/2008
Other Editions of this Title
"[Red] said, 'Everybody knows that I drink, but nobody understands my thirst.'"

Another author crafting a line like that would surround it with a lot of excess nonsense that would only lesson its impact. To John Dufrense, it's a toss off line, easily missed, utterly poignant, one of hundreds peppering this honey-and-broken-glass novel. Sure to make anyone pick up all of his backlist. I LOVED it!

Water for Elephants (Paperback)

By Sara Gruen
$14.95
ISBN-13: 9781565125605
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, 5/2007
Other Editions of this Title
Not sure why I couldn't stop crying when I finished this book. Because I'll never write one this good? Because of the beauty and ugliness of life reflected in its pages? Because my 93-year-old Tota just died and I never got to hear her story?

Sometimes, turning the last page of book, finishing a good story, is a quaint tragedy. This is one of those times.

An Arsonist's Guide to Writers' Homes in New England (Paperback)

By Brock Clarke
$13.95
ISBN-13: 9781565126145
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, 9/2008
Other Editions of this Title
Clarke creates arsonist Sam Pulsifier with the precision of a micro-surgeon, which gives the book its heart and soul. Whether browsing a bookstore or waiting in a cold van, Sam's internal monologues are rich and pitch-perfect. That Sam is in the middle of a great story doesn't hurt, either.

Watchmen (Paperback)

By Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons
$19.99
ISBN-13: 9780930289232
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: DC Comics, 4/1995
Other Editions of this Title
Since this was published in '86, there are probably many reviews floating around out there with more insight and depth than I can offer.

I can't even convince my roommate to read this, and she's working her way through "1,001 Books to Read Before You Die" (Watchmen is #227).

It's also on Time's 100-Best novels. It won a Hugo.

Lines keep occurring to me. It's really, just a great story.

The God of Animals (Hardcover)

By Aryn Kyle
$25.00
ISBN-13: 9781416533245
Availability: Special Order - Subject to Availability
Published: Scribner, 3/2007
Other Editions of this Title
I loved this in hardcover. One of my favorites of 2007, I sold it with a money-back guarantee. Despite the terrible cover, no one came looking for a refund.

When she came a touring for the paperback

The Resurrectionist (Hardcover)

By Jack O'Connell
$24.95
ISBN-13: 9781565125766
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, 4/2008

When a book interweaves a fantastic story that may-or-may-not-wink-wink have bearing on a second, real-world plot, one of two things usually happens. The lifeless reality the author creates serves only as filler for the fun, otherworldly stuff, and you find yourself bored, waiting for the portion of the book you actually enjoy to resume. Or when the two worlds meet (or "collide," as they often seem to do), the resolution is completely unsatisfying. Both plots in Jack O'Connell's fifth book are better than the other, and the resolution is downright masterful.

The Collected Stories of Amy Hempel (Paperback)

By Amy Hempel, Rick Moody
$16.00
ISBN-13: 9780743291637
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Scribner, 9/2007

Here are two quotes:

"Sister has her eye on the fellow from the post office. When you buy a sheet of stamps from him, he rubs the gooey side of the sheet against his hair. He says that the oil from human hair will keep the stamps from sticking to one another in your purse. It's a handy tip, and a gesture you want to remember when you go to lick a stamp." -Murder

"The truth is, the beach is like excess weight. If we lost it, what would the excuse be then?" -Tonight is a Favor to Holly

I could go on and on, but simply, if you don't read this book, you hate literature.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (Hardcover)

To articulate what this book meant to me (and my cousin, my mother, and my sister), I'd have to rip my heart from my chest, slice it down the middle, and invite you to review the contents.

Yes, it is that good.

The Raw Shark Texts (Hardcover)

I just re-read this for the first time. I might not give it five stars again, but I loved it enough the first time around to shell out my own money not just for the US version, but for the UK version. When a bookseller spends money on a book, that says something.

A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again: Essays and Arguments (Paperback)

By David Foster Wallace
$14.99
ISBN-13: 9780316925280
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Back Bay Books, 2/1998
Other Editions of this Title
A friend of mine recommended this in 2002. I'm only sorry it took Wallace's untimely death to spur me into finally picking it up.

His neuroses are ours. His observations are so brilliant that you'll love to hear his thoughts, whether on tennis or movies or luxury cruises. Enjoy this immediately.

One wanring, having a dictionary next to you won't cut it, not even a collegate one. Context will give you the gist, but keep a notepad handy. Later, look online for abbreviations and antiquated words the dictionary doesn't bother with.

Now, enjoy.
