Dr. Carl Hart -- High Price -- Gables

Jun 26 2013 8:00 pm

A pioneering neuroscientist shares his story of growing up in one of Miami's toughest neighborhoods and how it led him to his groundbreaking work in drug addiction.

As a youth, Carl Hart didn't realize the value of school; he studied just enough to stay on the basketball team. At the same time, he was immersed in street life. Today he is a cutting-edge neuroscientist—Columbia University's first tenured African American professor in the sciences—whose landmark, controversial research is redefining our understanding of addiction.

In this provocative and eye-opening memoir, he recalls his journey of self-discovery and weaves his past and present. Hart goes beyond the hype of the antidrug movement as he examines the relationship among drugs, pleasure, choice, and motivation, both in the brain and in society. His findings shed new light on common ideas about race, poverty, and drugs, and explain why current policies are failing.

Though Hart escaped neighborhoods that were dominated by entrenched poverty and the knot of problems associated with it, he has not turned his back on his roots. Determined to make a difference, he tirelessly applies his scientific research to help save real lives. But balancing his former street life with his achievements today has not been easy—a struggle he reflects on publicly for the first time.

A powerful story of hope and change, of a scientist who has dedicated his life to helping others, High Price will alter the way we think about poverty, race, and addiction—and how we can effect change.

He is also a research scientist in the Division of Substance Abuse at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. Arthur Rosenfeld -- Tai Chi -- The Perfect Exercise -- Gables

Jun 27 2013 8:00 pm

Tai Chi — The Perfect Exercise is an introduction to, and argument for, the relevance of tai chi in the modern world. Written with a novelist’s voice and augmented by fine-art, black-and-white photographs and clear instructional diagrams, the book introduces this ancient, Taoist practice enjoyed by millions worldwide as a curative, longevity practice, a spiritual path, a way to combat stress, and a practical martial art.

About the Author

Arthur Rosenfeld began his formal martial arts training in 1980 and has studied deeply in China and the United States. A Yale graduate, he has his needle in the vein of Chinese tai chi grandmasters, and is dedicated to personal transformation and social change through the application of tai chi practice and Taoist philosophy. In 2012 he was ordained a Taoist monk at the Chun Yang (Pure Yang) Taoist Temple in Guangzhou, the first Westerner to be so honored. He hosts the hit (56MM households tune in) national public television show Longevity Tai Chi with Arthur Rosenfeld.

Rosenfeld blogs on The Huffington Post, and his offerings also appear in Vogue, Vanity Fair, Parade, Newsweek Ebony, The Wall Street Journal, Fox Business News, and numerous other websites and newspapers nationwide. He was named Tai Chi Master of The Year at the World Congress on Qigong and Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2011, and received the Action On Film Festival’s Maverick award (previous recipients include David Carradine, John Savage, and Talia Shire) in August 2012.

In 2010, Rosenfeld produced and hosted a documentary series on the scientific evidence for acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation. Funded by the pharmaceutical industry, tens of thousands of copies of these films have been distributed to major medical centers, professional healthcare organizations, group medical practices, patient advocacy associations and more. In 2012 he produced a follow-up instructional series.

Rosenfeld has penned 12 critically acclaimed books, some of which have sold bestseller numbers and been optioned to Hollywood. Along with the Dalai Lama, he was a finalist for the prestigious Books for a Better Life award for his bestseller The Truth About Chronic Pain (New York: Basic Books, 2003), and his prize-winning novels have recently focused on Chinese philosophy and martial arts action. Sheila Heti -- How Should a Person Be? -- Gables

Jun 28 2013 8:00 pm

A raw, startling, genre-defying novel of friendship, sex, and love in the new millennium—a compulsive read that's like "spending a day with your new best friend" (Bookforum)

Reeling from a failed marriage, Sheila, a twentysomething playwright, finds herself unsure of how to live and create. When Margaux, a talented painter and free spirit, and Israel, a sexy and depraved artist, enter her life, Sheila hopes that through close—sometimes too close—observation of her new friend, her new lover, and herself, she might regain her footing in art and life.

Using transcribed conversations, real emails, plus heavy doses of fiction, the brilliant and always innovative Sheila Heti crafts a work that is part literary novel, part self-help manual, and part bawdy confessional. It's a totally shameless and dynamic exploration into the way we live now, which breathes fresh wisdom into the eternal questions: What is the sincerest way to love? What kind of person should you be?

About the Author

Sheila Heti is the author of several books of fiction, including The Middle Stories and Ticknor; and an essay collection written with Misha Glouberman, The Chairs Are Where the People Go. Her writing has been translated into ten languages and her work has appeared in The New York Times, Bookforum, McSweeney's, n+1, The Guardian, and other places. She works as interviews editor at The Believer magazine and lives in Toronto.

Kevin Maurer & Mitch Weiss -- Hunting Che -- Gables

Jul 9 2013 8:00 pm

An iconic symbol of violent revolution, Ernesto “Che” Guevera has gone down in history as one of the most feared revolutionaries of the late twentieth century. But until now, details of his capture and execution have been told with a sympathetic eye toward the icon. Using government reports, documents, and eyewitness accounts, Hunting Che reveals how the Green Berets trained Bolivian soldiers in the spring and summer of 1967 to hunt the legendary revolutionary who was hiding in the mountainous jungles of the South American country. A sweeping narrative, Hunting Che tells the untold story of one of the first truly successful U.S. Special Forces missions in history—a mission later duplicated in Afghanistan and Iraq.

By the mid-1960s, Guevera had become famous for his outspoken criticism of the United States and his support for armed Communist insurgencies. He had been one of the architects of the Cuban Revolution, and was attempting to repeat his success throughout Latin America. His guerrilla tactics and talent for proselytizing made him a threat to American foreign policy—and when he turned his attention to Bolivia in 1967, the Pentagon made a decision: Che had to be eliminated.

Major Ralph “Pappy” Shelton was called upon to lead the mission to train the Bolivians. With a hand-picked team of specialists, his first task was to transform a ragtag group of peasants into a trained fighting force who could also gather intelligence. Gary Prado, a Bolivian officer, volunteered to join the newly formed Bolivian Rangers. Joined by Felix Rodriguez, a Cuban exile working for the CIA, the Americans and Bolivians searched for Che. The size of Che’s group and when they would strike were unknowns, and the stakes were high. If Bolivia fell, it would validate Che’s theories and throw South America into turmoil.

Hunting Che follows the exploits of Major Shelton, Felix Rodriguez, and Gary Prado—the Bolivian Ranger commander who ultimately captured him. The story begins with Che’s arrival in Bolivia and follows the hunt to the dramatic confrontation and capture of the iconic leader in the southeastern village of La Higuera. With the White House and the Pentagon secretly monitoring every move, Shelton and his team changed history, and prevented a catastrophic threat from taking root in the West.

About the Authors

Kevin Maurer has covered special operations forces for eight years. He has been embedded with the U.S. Special Forces in Afghanistan six times in the last five years and spent ten weeks with a team of Green Berets in Afghanistan in 2010. He has also been embedded with American soldiers in Iraq, East Africa, and Haiti. The author of several books, Maurer recently co-authored the #1 New York Times bestseller No Easy Day. He lives in Wilmington, NC.

Mitch Weiss is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist for the Associated Press. In 2003, he was assigned to an investigative series that uncovered the longest string of atrocities carried out by a U.S. fighting unit in the Vietnam War. In recognition of the series “Buried Secrets, Brutal Truths,” which led to an investigation by the Pentagon, he was awarded the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting. Weiss currently works for the AP on investigative projects.

Steve Liebowitz -- Devorah: Books One of the Covenant and the Scrolls -- Gables

Jul 10 2013 6:30 pm
The Bible tells us that 175 years after Moses led the Children of Israel out of Egypt, there arose a woman, Devorah, a daughter of Ephraim, to be a Judge over her people, a prophetess and a righteous example unto them. The Bible also tells us of Devorah’s husband, Lappodoth; Barak, the great Hebrew general; Sisera the Canaanite general; Yael the Kenite, slayer of Sisera; and of Sisera’s mother, Betheena. The Bible touches only the high points of their lives. This is a more complete story.

At story’s heart, are two different views of God--God as an accessible, benign, loving and present force, and God as a distant, arbitrary, capricious and punishing monster. Devorah called the punishing fearsome God (the God of the temple and formal worship) the God of the Scrolls; and she called the benign and accessible God, the God of the Covenant.

Devorah’s story is the first in a series of novels based on this unique alternative view of God and its influence on the lives Old Testament characters. The Covenant and The Scrolls, Book One shows Devorah as a prophet, mother and the only female Judge ever to rule ancient Israel walking a tightrope between her personal view of God as an accessible, benign, loving and present force, and the prevailing traditional view of God as a distant, arbitrary, capricious and punishing power that, as the official representative of the state, she is expected to uphold.

The Covenant and The Scrolls series describes biblical events and characters beginning with Devorah, through Kings Saul, David and Solomon, from the perspective of this unique alternative view of God and the two almost completely opposite experiences that arise from it. For example, when King Saul is centered in the Covenant, he has no headaches; but with the Scrolls, he is tortured by ‘evil spirits’.

Steve Liebowitz’ interest in alternative views of the Bible and what else might have gone on behind the scenes, began when he read Kazantzakis’ Last Temptation of Christ under fire during the first TET Offensive in Vietnam in 1968. What he learned and wants to share in these books--that God is both more than and less than we’ve always thought Her to be, not only sustained him in the defense of his doctoral dissertation (on alternative ways of knowing) in l990, but continues to support his Business Coaching practice today. He’s lived this stuff, as well as researched it.

As you read, please consider that Devorah, Saul and the others in The Covenant and The Scrolls are probably not the only people to experience the two almost completely opposite experiences of God. Perhaps you have, too.

About the Author

Dr. Steve Liebowitz' professional career began in 1966 with the completion of training as an English teacher with the Peace Corps in Ethiopia. He then served three years in the U.S. Army with tours at a top secret military installation outside Washington, D.C., Viet Nam and Wiesbaden, Germany.  Dr. Liebowitz earned a Doctorate in Human Resource Development (Florida International University, 1991) and Masters Degrees in Health Care Management (Florida International University, 1977), and Public Administrations (Florida Atlantic University, 1974).

Throughout his 27 year career as a human resource developer with Miami-Dade County Government, Dr. Liebowitz kept active in the South Florida community: Miami Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development; Hospice, Inc., now Vitas; the F.I.U. Alumni Association; International Coaching Federation, South Florida Chapter; the South Florida Writers Association; South Florida Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration, and the Florida Speakers Association.

Along with teaching at F.I.U., St. Thomas, University of Miami. and Miami Dade College as an adjunct professor, Dr. Liebowitz served as an educational innovator on the faculties of the University Without Walls successor, the Union Institute in Cincinnati and on the National Faculty of Pepperdine University in California. Dr. Liebowitz has also pioneered programs in computer assisted instruction and distance learning.

Among those to have recognized Dr. Liebowitz for excellence are: Junior Achievement Inc., International Society for General Semantics, Leadership South Dade, the M.E.E.D. Program, the National Association of Counties, the Bass Museum of Art and the Children's Museum of South Florida.

Kiese Laymon -- Long Division -- Gables

Jul 11 2013 8:00 pm

Kiese Laymon’s debut novel is a Twain-esque exploration of celebrity, authorship, violence, religion, and coming of age in Post-Katrina Mississippi, written in a voice that’s alternately funny, lacerating, and wise. The book contains two interwoven stories. In the first, it’s 2013: after an on-stage meltdown during a nationally televised quiz contest, 14-year-old Citoyen “City” Coldson becomes an overnight YouTube celebrity. The next day, he’s sent to stay with his grandmother in the small coastal community of Melahatchie, where a young girl named Baize Shephard has recently disappeared.

Before leaving, City is given a strange book without an author called Long Division. He learns that one of the book’s main characters is also named City Coldson—but Long Division is set in 1985. This 1985 City, along with his friend and love-object, Shalaya Crump, discovers a way to travel into the future, and steals a laptop and cellphone from an orphaned teenage rapper called...Baize Shephard. They ultimately take these with them all the way back to 1964, to help another time-traveler they meet protect his family from the Klan.

City’s two stories ultimately converge in the mysterious work shed behind his grandmother’s, where he discovers the key to Baize’s disappearance.
