Raymond Jungles & Margi Nothard -- Landscape Architecture Now! -- Gables

One of the hottest areas of contemporary design is landscape architecture. No matter what the architectural style of the moment, the green areas around houses, stadiums or corporate headquarters have taken on a considerable importance, all the more so with the emphasis on ecology and green design. Landscape Architecture Now! calls on the work of the top designers of the moment, from Ken Smith, author of the Museum of Modern Art’s rooftop garden, to West 8 from Rotterdam, but also on architects ranging from Steven Holl to Tadao Ando, who have long been fascinated by the environments of their buildings. Among the new names are two from South Florida: Raymond Jungles and Margi Nothard.

Jungles’s multiple award-winning project is the bold, simple and timeless design for 1111 Lincoln Road, in the City of Miami. This project received the 2011 City of Miami Beach Beautification Award and Award of Excellence from the Florida Chapter American Society of Landscape Architects. The Lincoln Road project bridges the urban dweller with nature, affording vantage points and multi-functional areas for the users of this foremost historic pedestrian mall in Florida.

Nothard’s Young Circle ArtsPark is a significant urban design and cultural project located in downtown Hollywood, Florida. The 10-acre park immerses its visitors in a sensory environment through Architecture, Landscape, with Visual and Performing Arts and Community engaging activities. The ArtsPark Buildings include two Pavilions, the Visual Arts Pavilion, providing the public options for community classes, a glass blowing studio, metal studio, painting studio, exhibit, classroom and support facilities and an outdoor covered amphitheater. The Performing Arts Pavilion and lawn seating includes a state of the Art stage, equipment, support spaces and parking. The architecture itself uses materials and colors that are both inspired by and sustainable in this environment.

About the Architects

RAYMOND JUNGLES was born in Omaha Nebraska in 1956. He graduated with honors from the University of Florida (1981) with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree and founded Raymond Jungles Inc in 1982. Raymond’s inspiration for his design emanates from Roberto Burle Marx, the famous Brazilian garden designer. The two men met in 1979 when Burle Marx came to a lecture at the University of Florida. Raymond has thirty-one years of experience in the study and practice of landscape architecture. His passion for design and broad base of knowledge informs each and every project, from concept to completion.

Born in Zimbabwe and raised in South Africa, MARGI NOTHARD completed her Masters in Architecture at the Southern California Institute of Architecture. Her primary Studio work has been as Design Director and President of Glavovic Studio, envisioning over 50 projects including large scale cultural, institutional, private and affordable housing projects. Recent accomplishments include the innovative Young at Art | Museum Broward County Library, co-designed with AECOM, Kennedy Homes, 132 affordable housing units in a unique urban corridor setting and mid-rise Sailboat Bend, affordable senior community residential project. Nothard's work pays specific attention to local and global connectivity, contemporary culture, sustainability, process and outcome and innovative use of materials. This is evident at the Museum of Art, the Girls' Club, Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood's Young Circle Artspark. As an artist, recent large scale commissions include the entrance and gateway ArtPlaza, a site specific art project titled Threshold for the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale and Flow, Broward County Courthouse Project, making connections between the history, topography and culture of Broward County.
