MUSEUM LECTURE: Tom Gjelten -- Bacardi and the Long Fight for Cuba -- Gables
Start: 7:00 pm
MUSEUM LECTURE: NPR correspondent Tom Gjelten will give a talk based on his book, Bacardi and the Long Fight for Cuba (Viking, $17) that fuses the story of the Bacardi family and their famous rum business with Cuba's tumultuous experience over the last 150 years to produce a deeply entertaining historical narrative. The company Facundo Bacardi launched in Cuba in 1862 brought worldwide fame to the island, and in the decades that followed his Bacardi descendants participated in every aspect of Cuban life. With his intimate account of their struggles and adventures across five generations, Gjelten brings to life the larger story of Cuba's fight for freedom, its tortured relationship with America, the rise of Fidel Castro, and the violent division of the Cuban nation. This event is presented in collaboration with Books & Books and in conjunction with the exhibition, Bacardi: Architecture, Art & Identity, curated by professor and author Allan Shulman and sponsored by Bacardi that is currently on view at the Coral Gables Museum through February 17, 2013. The talk begins promptly at 7pm. For more information: info@coralgablesmuseum.org
Barbara Vinick -- Today I am a Woman: Stories of Bat Mitzvah Around the World -- Gables
Start: 8:00 pm
Recollections of the first bat mitzvah at the only synagogue in Indonesia, a poignant bat mitzvah memory of World War II Italy, and an American bat mitzvah shared with girls in a Ukrainian orphanage--these are a few of the resonant testimonies about the transition from Jewish girl to Jewish woman collected in Today I Am a Woman: Stories of Bat Mitzvah Around the World (Indiana University Press, $29.95) by Barbara Vinick. Introduced by brief biographical notes and descriptions of Jewish communities around the world, these stories reveal how Judaism defines this important rite of passage in a girl's life in widely disparate settings. The contributions are from bat mitzvah girls of the past and present, their parents, communities, and religious leaders. Including evocative family photos--some recent, some from decades past--this rich compilation is an ideal gift for bat mitzvah celebrants, their families, and friends.
