In A Father First (William Morrow, $26.99), we meet the coaches, mentors, and teammates who played pivotal roles in Dwyane's stunning basketball career--from his early days shooting hoops on the neighborhood courts in Chicago, to his rising stardom at Marquette University in Milwaukee, to his emergence as an unheralded draft pick by the Miami Heat. This book is a revealing, personal story of one of America's top athletes, but it is also a call to action--from a man who had to fight to be in his children's lives--that will show mothers and fathers how to step up and be parents themselves. If you have questions or need additional information, please contact us at (954) 262-0255 or email us at museumstore@moafl.org. Coral Gables Gallery Night: Klara Charvarria -- Gables
Start: 7:00 pm
Coral Gables Gallery Night: KLARA CHAVARRIA: For this exhibition, Guatemalan-born Klara Chavarria has created a group of mixed media paintings that explore our common human experience, our yearnings, and a search for a true purpose in life. Klara’s unique approach to expressionism and figurative abstraction, as well as her exploration of the spiritual, intellectual and emotional side of humanity, have paved the way for her philosophically-inclined body of work. Her innovative style and concepts are ever-changing and difficult to categorize. The origin of her work is a combination of intellectual analysis along with a purely soulful and spontaneous process. For her, painting is an inner-search providing a creative outlet to communicate and express her interests, feelings and emotions. Klara’s work is displayed in national and international collections and in numerous venues with ongoing shows and exhibitions. For the past four years, she has received honorable invitations to participate in the prestigious Latin American art auction “Juannio” at the Museum of Modern Art in Guatemala City.

Casey Klofstad -- Civic Talk -- Gables
Start: 8:00 pm
Does talking about civic issues encourage civic participation? In his innovative book, Civic Talk (Temple University Press, $26.95), Casey Klofstad shows that our discussions about politics and current events with our friends, colleagues, and relatives--"civic talk"--has the ability to turn thought into action--from voting to volunteering in civic organizations. Klofstad's path breaking research is the first to find evidence of a causal relationship between the casual chatting and civic participation. Klofstad contends that social context plays a central role in maintaining the strength of democracy. This conclusion cuts against the grain of previous research, which primarily focuses on individual-level determinants of civic participation, and negates social-level explanations. Presented in collaboration with the University of Miami’s Center for the Humanities.
