Gallery Show: Lillian Bassman prints -- Miami Beach
Check out 17 prints from famed fashion photographer Lillian Bassman, who died just last month, at Books & Books Miami Beach. Now through June 1.Bassman won acclaim in the 1940s and ’50s with high-contrast black-and-white portraits of models that had a dreamy quality. In the 1990s, she rediscovered a stash of lost negatives and emerged as a fine-art photographer.A new book of her work Lillian Bassman: Lingerie has just been published. As Ginia Bellafante put it in the New York Times recently, “In place of heavyset women constraining themselves in what was essentially equipment, Ms. Bassman deployed immeasurably lithe models, conveying a world in which women seemed to linger in the pleasures of their own sensuality.” Fifty years later, these images have lost none of their allure, and the enormous cultural impact of the TV show Mad Men has given them new currency.  1. Charlaine Harris -- Deadlocked -- Gables
Start: 7:00 pm
Growing up with telepathic abilities, Sookie Stackhouse realized early on there were things she’d rather not know. And now that she’s an adult, she also realizes that some things she knows about, she’d rather not see—like Eric Northman feeding off another woman. There’s a thing or two she’d like to say about that, but she has to keep quiet—Felipe de Castro, the Vampire King of Louisiana is in town. It’s the worst possible time for a human body to show up in Eric’s front yard—especially the body of the woman whose blood he just drank. Sookie thinks that, at least this time, the dead girl’s fate has nothing to do with her. But she is wrong. Discover what happens to Sookie and Bill in the newest book by Charlaine Harris -- Deadlocked (Ace, $27.95). Tonight, Charlaine will lead a Q&A session with fans, which will be followed by a book signing. All of the books in the Sookie Stackhouse series will be available for purchase and you must purchase at least (1) one book to be allowed entry into the signing line. To keep things running smoothly, fans are allowed to have (2) two books signed at a time.  Should they have more than 2 books, they will need to go through the line again. Charlaine will personalize and allow photos with fans. If you don’t want to wait in line, there will be autographed copies available for purchase to follow her talk. Keep in mind, only those books purchased at Books & Books will be eligible for signing -- and our telepathic booksellers will know if you’re not telling the truth!
