Gallery Show: Lillian Bassman prints -- Miami Beach
Check out 17 prints from famed fashion photographer Lillian Bassman, who died just last month, at Books & Books Miami Beach. Now through June 1.Bassman won acclaim in the 1940s and ’50s with high-contrast black-and-white portraits of models that had a dreamy quality. In the 1990s, she rediscovered a stash of lost negatives and emerged as a fine-art photographer.A new book of her work Lillian Bassman: Lingerie has just been published. As Ginia Bellafante put it in the New York Times recently, “In place of heavyset women constraining themselves in what was essentially equipment, Ms. Bassman deployed immeasurably lithe models, conveying a world in which women seemed to linger in the pleasures of their own sensuality.” Fifty years later, these images have lost none of their allure, and the enormous cultural impact of the TV show Mad Men has given them new currency.  1. Encuentros de Letra Urbana -- Gables
Start: 6:30 pm
Note: This event is in Spanish.
POSTPONED: Geoffrey Zakarian -- Town/Country -- Bal Harbour Shops
Start: 7:30 pm
POSTPONED: Due to an unavoidable conflict, Geoffrey Zakarian has had to reschedule his event. We will let you know as soon as we have a new date. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. For every home cook who wanders the aisles of the local supermarket asking the question “What do I want to cook for dinner?,” celebrated chef Geoffrey Zakarian—owner of the highly acclaimed restaurants Town and Country in New York City—offers two sublime recipes for each of his sixty-five favorite ingredients. Whether it’s just-in-season asparagus, a gorgeous steak beckoning from the butcher’s case, or the sweetest August corn that catches your eye, Zakarian helps you turn it into a quick weeknight meal or Sunday supper—a Country recipe—or elegant Saturday-night dinner-party fare—a Town preparation. Featuring stunning full-color photographs and an approach that is at once familiar and fantastic, comfortable and creative, Geoffrey Zakarian’s Town/Country presents the perfect combination for amateur to ambitious American cooks.
Ben Anderson -- No Worse Enemy -- Gables
Start: 8:00 pm
In this powerful and shocking exposé from the front lines in Helmand province, leading journalist and documentary-maker Ben Anderson shows just how bad it has got. Detailing battles that last for days, only to be fought again weeks later, Anderson survives IED explosions and sniper fire, and witnesses the disturbing incompetence among the Afghan army and police. No Worse Enemy (Oneworld, $24.95) is a heartbreaking insight into the daily struggles facing US troops. A product of five years’ unrivalled access to the US Marines and UK Forces – often for months at a time and amidst the worst violence the conflict has seen – this is the most intimate and horrifying account of the Afghan war you will read.
