Gallery Show: Lillian Bassman prints -- Miami Beach
Check out 17 prints from famed fashion photographer Lillian Bassman, who died just last month, at Books & Books Miami Beach. Now through June 1.Bassman won acclaim in the 1940s and ’50s with high-contrast black-and-white portraits of models that had a dreamy quality. In the 1990s, she rediscovered a stash of lost negatives and emerged as a fine-art photographer.A new book of her work Lillian Bassman: Lingerie has just been published. As Ginia Bellafante put it in the New York Times recently, “In place of heavyset women constraining themselves in what was essentially equipment, Ms. Bassman deployed immeasurably lithe models, conveying a world in which women seemed to linger in the pleasures of their own sensuality.” Fifty years later, these images have lost none of their allure, and the enormous cultural impact of the TV show Mad Men has given them new currency.  1. Jim Duggan -- Hacksaw: The Jim Duggan Story -- Gables
Start: 6:00 pm
AUTOGRAPHING: Offering professional wrestling fans a ringside seat into his adventurous life, WWE Hall of Fame wrestler Jim Duggan recounts for the first time key moments and legendary bouts both inside and outside the ring in Hacksaw: The Jim Duggan Story (Triumph, $19.95). Known to millions of enthusiasts as a charismatic patriot -- with an American flag in his right hand and his signature two-by-four in his left -- Duggan shares how an injury-plagued NFL rookie season curtailed his football ambitions and paved the way for a brighter career in professional wrestling. Rising to fame in the Cold War–era 1980s, Duggan engaged in legendary feuds with some of the biggest names in wrestling, including the Iron Sheik, Nikolai Volkoff, and Andre the Giant. Duggan also reflects on his fight against kidney cancer during the prime of his career. With each page peppered with Duggan’s charming wit, fans will find much to enjoy and discover about the man they once knew only as “Hacksaw.”
Mark Roscombs -- Masseria -- Bal Harbour Shops
Start: 7:30 pm
Join us for the first of our Rizzoli Studio Series – an evening of Italian architecture, wine and conversation with photographer Mark Roskams. Roskams will be discussing his book, Masseria: The Italian Farmhouses of Puglia (Rizzoli, $55) with project director Cristina Rizzo. Located on Italy’s sun-drenched southeast coast, the unique and rustic interiors of Puglia’s ancient Masserie buildings speak of a historic past and are inspiring to all those who love rustic living. Surrounded by verdant vineyards and groves of olive trees, the Masserie of Puglia -- fortified domestic structures of brick, stone, and concrete dating from the Middle Ages -- embody a rich cultural past largely unexplored by the tourists and villa-seekers of Tuscany. Once serving as farmhouses and way stations for those traveling along the Via Appia, these buildings have been renovated to serve as private residences or boutique hotels, with their beautifully preserved interiors thoughtfully adapted and turned into a cool serenity. With striking photography by Mark Roskams, this book offers a previously unseen look into these spaces. Wine reception sponsored by AOC French Wines.
