Michael Hettich's poems are like grace, like gifts, like the natural world made Technicolor, like Technicolor making the natural world.  He is a master of the simile, and in Like Happiness, he harnesses a specific and collective memory, the power of myth and allusion, like no one else.  His poems give his readers a deep happiness, an earned happiness, a happiness decided upon with clarity and wisdom. -- Denise Duhamel

Steven Daiber & Jacqueline Hayden - El Muro: The Wall by Eduardo Hernandez Santos - Gables
Start: Oct 16 2010 7:00 pm

Steven Daiber, a book artist from Massachusetts, has been to Cuba regularly since 2001 and has facilitated dialogue between Cuban and foreign artists. Tonight, Daiber will present his most recent collaboration, El muro (Red Trillium, $60), a collection of photographs by Eduardo Hernández Santos, documenting the Cuban LGBT community. The book chronicles late-night life at Havana's utmost limit of the city: the seafront wall, popularly know as the Malecón. El muro is a significant visual source of constantly thwarted gay nightlife in Havana, but above all it is a social document about the members of a historical underclass emerging from hiding to contest efforts to control their lifestyles, to proclaim their normality and their non-conformity of the status quo. Tonight, Daiber will speak about Hernández and his work, the difficulties encountered in creating these images, and the process of turning them into a book. Hernández Santos took these photographs of homosexuals,
transgenders and crossdressers in the summer of 2005 at Havana’s seafront wall. Working only at night, he developed his film with expired chemicals and printed his images on outdated photo paper. His darkroom was his bedroom. Once Hernández made his prints, he used transfer lettering to literally press onto his images the words of the late gay Cuban poet and playwright, Virgilio Piñera. One night at 4am, on his way home, Hernández Santos was beaten and robbed of his camera. His project ended then and there. These indelible images, published here for the first time would never have seen the light of day in Cuba. 7pm

CANCELLED: Jack Beckham-Combs and Julia Sweig - The Cubans - Gables
Start: Oct 18 2010 7:00 pm

Unfortunately, this event has been cancelled. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Photographs that purport to represent Cuba and its people often reproduce the narrow American imagination of the place, starting and ending in Old Havana. The documentary photographer Jack Beckham-Combs has been making photographs of the Cuban people over the course of six years and fifteen visits to the island. His images range from the urban to the rural, from saturated colors and polished night skies to vibrant street scenes full of movement and sere agricultural landscapes. Much of Combs' time was spent outside Havana, traveling to cities, smaller towns, villages, and farms in every Cuban province. In The Cubans (Documentary Photography, $49.95), his pictures of agricultural life are beautiful pastoral compositions. Rarer still is the emphasis his eye places on ordinary people living their everyday lives. In the accompanying essay, Dr. Julia E. Sweig – the Rockefeller Senior Fellow and Director of Latin American Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington – ponders the future of Cuba and the Cubans and the factors that make this conundrum so complex, but one that is sure to result in change. 7pm

Gwen Cooper - Homer's Odyssey - Bal Harbour Shops
Start: Oct 20 2010 7:30 pm

Once in nine lives, something extraordinary happens. Homer’s Odyssey (Bantam, $15) is the extraordinary story of what happened to Gwen Cooper and her cat Homer. The last thing Gwen wanted was another cat. She already had two, not to mention a phenomenally underpaying job and a recently broken
heart. Then Gwen’s veterinarian called with a story about a three-week-old eyeless kitten who’d been abandoned. It was love at first sight. The kitten nobody believed in quickly grew into a three-pound dynamo with a giant heart who eagerly made friends with every human who crossed his path. Homer scaled seven-foot bookcases with ease, survived being trapped alone for days after 9/11 in an apartment near the World Trade Center, and even saved Gwen’s life when he chased off an intruder who broke into their home in the middle of the night. But it was Homer’s unswerving loyalty, his infinite capacity for love, and his joy in the face of all obstacles that transformed Gwen’s life. And by the time she met the man she would marry, she realized that Homer had taught her the most valuable lesson of all: Love isn’t something you see with your eyes. Presented in collaboration with The Cat Network and meet some cats looking for adoptive homes. 7:30pm

Pamela S. Hammons - Gender, Sexuality and Material Objects in English Renaissance Verse - Gables
Start: Oct 20 2010 8:00 pm

An important contribution to recent critical discussions about Gender, Sexuality, and Material Objects in English Renaissance Verse (University of Miami, $99.95), this study analyzes female- and male-authored lyrics to illuminate how gender and sexuality inflected 16th- and 17th-century poets' conceptualization of relations among people and things, human and non-human subjects and objects. Pamela S. Hammons examines lyrics from both manuscript and print collections — including the verse of authors ranging from Robert Herrick, John Donne, and Ben Jonson to Margaret Cavendish, Lucy Hutchinson, and Aemilia Lanyer — and situates them in relation to legal theories, autobiographies, biographies, plays, and epics. Her approach fills a crucial gap in the conversation, which has focused upon drama and male-authored works. She puts the significance of the lyric and women's writing in the foreground. This event is presented in collaboration with the Center for the Humanities at the University of Miami. 8pm

Richard C. Morais - The Hundred Foot Journey - Gables
Start: Oct 21 2010 8:00 pm

"That skinny Indian teenager has that mysterious something that comes along once a generation. He is one of those rare chefs who is simply born. He is an artist." And so begins the rise of Hassan Haji, the unlikely gourmand who recounts his life’s journey in Richard Morais’ charming novel, The Hundred-Foot Journey (Scribner, $23). Born above his grandfather’s modest restaurant in Mumbai, Hassan first experienced life through intoxicating whiffs of spicy fish curry, trips to the local markets, and gourmet outings with his mother. But when tragedy pushes the family out of India, they console themselves by eating their way around the world, eventually settling in Lumière, a small village in the French Alps. The boisterous Haji family takes Lumière by storm. They open an inexpensive Indian restaurant opposite an esteemed French relais—that of the famous chef Madame Mallory—and infuse the sleepy town with the spices of India, transforming the lives of its eccentric villagers and infuriating their celebrated neighbor. Only after Madame Mallory wages culinary war with the immigrant family, does she finally agree to mentor young Hassan, leading him to Paris, the launch of his own restaurant, and a slew of new adventures. A testament to the inevitability of destiny, this is a fable for the ages—charming, endearing, and compulsively readable. 8pm

“Repairman Jack is one of my favorite characters--I'm full of happy anticipation every time I hold a new RJ novel in my hands.”

--Charlaine Harris, creator of True Blood

The End of the World is at hand!

Munir Habib's life has become a nightmare. His tormentor has warned Munir not to report the kidnapping of his family, or else they will pay a terrible price. A friend realizes something is terribly wrong and tells Munir he doesn't have to go to the cops. There's a guy who fixes situations like this-Repairman Jack. Jack is backed into helping Munir despite his ongoing involvement in the cosmic shadow war between the Ally and the Otherness. Or perhaps because of it. He's chafing at being forced into the defensive role of protecting the Lady, the physical embodiment of the consciousness of the planet Earth.
Meanwhile, the Septimus Order and the Kickers are seemingly working in concert on a plot to extinguish the Lady and open the way for the Otherness to take over our reality. To top it all off, Dawn Pickering finally goes into labor and delivers a baby she only glimpses as it's whisked away, and is terrified by what she sees. Later she's told the baby died, but she doesn't believe it. Neither does Weezy. Neither does Jack. All these interlocking plots mean doom for humanity. But Jack never gives up or gives in.

Start: Oct 28 2010 7:00 pm

Breathtaking photographs capture the history and unique design of the English island great houses, detailing the hardwood furniture, terraced gardens, walled courtyards, and interiors. Perhaps the most admired and influential of tropical styles, the English island style transformed residences into private paradises. British West Indies Style is a lavish account of the interiors, architecture, and lifestyle of the English colonial great houses and historic town houses in the Caribbean—from Antigua, Jamaica, Nevis, Barbados, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Kitts, Mustique to the less-traveled islands of Bequia and Dominica. Close to fifty private homes are featured, with unique collections of antique, indigenous, and colonial furniture: a southern plantation style scaled and refreshingly adapted to the airy, sunny climate of the Windward and Leeward Islands. Presenting a world rarely seen by visitors—the homes of the islands’ affluent planters, both historical and contemporary—the English island styles are elegant yet practical and accessible, giving ideas for the use of local materials, painting and stenciling techniques, environment-enhancing design, and indoor/outdoor living—all of which are ubiquitous in contemporary interior design.

Michael Connors, an expert in West Indies antiques, is a contributor to numerous publications, including Art & Antiques, Antiques and Fine Art, and The Magazine Antiques. He has written many books, including Caribbean Houses: History, Style, and Architecture (Rizzoli, 2009).

Tucker Max - Assholes Finish First - Gables
Start: Oct 29 2010 8:00 pm

What do you do after you write a #1 bestselling book about your drunken, sexual misadventures that makes you rich and famous? Celebrate by getting more drunk and having insane amounts of sex, obviously. And pretty soon you’ve got another fucking book on your hands. Stuffed full of ridiculous stories of bad decisions, debauchery, and sexual recklessness, Assholes Finish First starts where I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell left off, then proceeds to "some next-level shit." You already know how women react to confidence, game, and vodka, but what happens when you add money and fame to the mix? You get answers to the hard questions you’ve never thought of asking:• What’s it like to have sex with a midget? What about two midgets?• How does it feel to get multiple requests to "fuck for charity"?• What does it do to a man to watch a 19-year-old do wind sprints to sober up, so that she can have sex with you before her twin sister does?• At what number of virgins does deflowering them stop being fun and start feeling like a job?• When a girl you met three hours ago decides to tattoo your name next to her pussy, what is the appropriate reaction?• Can you X-ray a blowjob? The answers are inside, they are absurd and hilarious, and they are the product of one man’s experiences:

His name is Tucker Max, and he is still an asshole.

AUTOGRAPHING ONLY: Tucker will personalize and allow
photos.

Ari's already complicated world is suddenly turned upside down when he is faced with a painful choice: participate in a monumental case involving national security, or risk his very own freedom. It includes a whirlwind investigation and international trial that might lead to the discovery of a potentially gigantic cache of riches in one of the world's most secret tax havens. Written about a former Internal Revenue Service Special Agent, attorney and CPA, the episodes in this novel stretch from the Florida Keys to the Black Hills of South Dakota; from the Principality of Liechtenstein to the Golden Triangle of Southeast Asia. 2pm

Michael Connors - British West Indies Style - Gables
Start: Oct 30 2010 6:00 pm

Ingrid Betancourt - Even Silence Has an End - Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus
Start: Oct 30 2010 7:30 pm

Ingrid Betancourt tells the story of her captivity in the Colombian jungle, sharing powerful teachings of resilience, resistance, and faith in Even Silence Has an End (Penguin, $29.95). Born in Bogotá, raised in France, Ingrid Betancourt gave up a life of comfort and safety to return to Colombia to become a political leader in a country that was being slowly destroyed by terrorism, violence, fear, and a pervasive sense of hopelessness. In 2002, while campaigning as a candidate in the Colombian presidential elections, she was abducted by the FARC. Nothing could have prepared her for what came next. She would spend the next six and a half years in the depths of the jungle as a prisoner of the FARC. This is her deeply personal and moving account of that time. Chained day and night for much of her captivity, she never stopped dreaming of escape and, in fact, succeeded in getting away several times, always to be recaptured. The facts of her story are astounding, but it is Betancourt's indomitable spirit that drives this very special account, bringing life, nuance, and profundity to the narrative. Freed in 2008 by the Colombian army, today Betancourt is determined to draw attention to the plight of hostages and victims of terrorism throughout the world and it is that passion that motivates Even Silence Has an End. The lessons she offers here – in courage, resilience, and humanity – are gifts to treasure. FREE tickets available at all Books & Books locations, while supplies last. This event is presented in collaboration with the Florida Center for the Literary Arts at Miami Dade College. Start time is 7:30pm.

Aurora Morcillo - The Seduction of Modern Spain - Gables
Start: Nov 1 2010 8:00 pm

Forthcoming from Bucknell University Press, The Seduction of Modern Spain: The Female Body and the Francoist Body Politic examines how sexual politics, specifically those surrounding the modernization of a consumer economy, are key to understanding the transformation of Spain from isolated dictatorship to modern state. It focuses on issues concerning modernity and the commodification of the female body under the dictatorship of Francisco Franco in the 1950s and 1960s.“These two decades are critical to understanding this transformation because they coincide with the opening of markets, the freer movement of people in and out of the country through tourism and emigration, and the embracing of the ‘American way of life’ popularized in Hollywood movies,” said author Aurora G. Morcillo, associate professor of history and women’s studies at FIU.From a gender perspective this “in between moment,” in Homi Bhaba's terms, from autarchy to consumerism favored the transition from the virginal female model, prescribed by the regime, (what the author calls “True Catholic Womanhood”) to a seductive modern woman that the media sold to Spanish women. The originality of this study resides in Dr. Morcillo’s use of feminist theories of the body to study archival sources of the Francoist years.Morcillo received her PhD in 1995 from the University of New Mexico. Her first book, True Catholic Womanhood: Gender Ideology in Franco's Spain, was published in 2000 with a second edition in 2008.

Ann Marie Stock - On Location in Cuba - Gables
Start: Nov 4 2010 7:00 pm

With the collapse of its Cold War relationship with the Soviet Union in the 1990s, Cuba plummeted into an era of scarcity and uncertainty known as the Special Period and only tentatively started to emerge with the new century. On Location in Cuba (UNC, $24.15) views these pivotal decades through the lens of cinema. Ann Marie Stock conducted hundreds of interviews
in Cuba to examine individual artists' lives and creative output. She explores the impact of the Cold War's end, the economic crisis that ensued, and the decentralization of the state's political, economic, and cultural apparatus. Stock focuses on what she calls Street Filmmaking -- the production of emerging audiovisual artists who work outside the state film industry -- to examine the island's transformation and changing notions of Cuban identity. Casino Jack - Event Cancelled
Start: Nov 6 2010 4:00 pm

It is with great sadness that we must share tragic news: George Hickenlooper has died. The director of the new motion picture CASINO JACK died of apparent natural causes at just 47 years old this past weekend.

The Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival will present a special montage in his memory at the two screenings of the film on Sunday, Nov. 7.

We at Books & Books send our sincere condolences to his family.

George Hickenlooper had been set to discuss his movie and sign copies of his director's notes and forward for the book Casino Jack by Norman Snider at Books & Books Bal Harbour Shops on Saturday, Nov. 6. In honor of Hickenlooper's work and passion for this story, we are including a brief description of Casino Jack here:

Detailing one of the most fascinating characters in recent political history, CASINO JACK, traces the rise and fall of Jack Abramoff, lobbyist extraordinaire. Political honchos Tom Delay (House Majority Leader) and Bob Ney (Congressman for Ohio) hitched their star to Abramoff’s wagon only to see it crash and burn. Abramoff and his sidekick Michael Scanlon pedaled their front of Washington influence to multiple Indian tribes and their casino operations.

Of particular interest to South Florida audiences is the Abramoff/Scanlon takeover of Sun Cruz Casinos (in the film called SunSail ) and its founder Gus Boulis.

The film’s all-star cast includes Kevin Spacey as the ambitious Abramoff, Barry Pepper as the scandalous Scanlon,Jon Lovitz – perfect in the part of the sleazy mattress monarch Adam Kidan, Kelly Preston as Pam Abramoff – unaware of the scope of her husband’s dealings  as Scanlon’s wronged fiance…and a host of other wonderful performances of some intriguing individuals including Rachelle LefevreDaniel Kash as Gus Boulis and the departed Maury Chaikin playing mobster Big Tony.

Award winning director George Hickenlooper created the best work of his career with a finely orchestrated dance that is laced with humor and seasoned with shock. The film moves quickly and holds our attention rapt. The fact that it is all (or mostly) true and a great deal of it happened right here in our own backyard makes the film even more enthralling. Toss in a who’s who of John McCain, Bill Clinton, Ralph Reed, Karl Rove, George W. Bush…and you have a brilliant motion picture.

George Hickenlooper's new film, CASINO JACK will premiere during the 25th Annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival on Sunday, November 7 at 5:15pm and 7:00pm at Cinema Paradiso in downtown Fort Lauderdale.  The festival runs through November 11. For details and tickets visit www.FLIFF.com or call 954-525-3456.
